King Abdullah of Saudi Arabia Dies at 90

Meles AbdulahSaudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz has died, royal officials have announced, weeks after he was admitted to hospital.

Abdullah, who had ruled since 2005 and was said to be aged about 90, had been suffering from a lung infection.

His 79-year-old half-brother, Salman, has been confirmed as the new king.

Within hours of his accession to the throne of the oil-rich kingdom, King Salman vowed to maintain the same policies as his predecessors.

“We will continue adhering to the correct policies which Saudi Arabia has followed since its establishment,” he said in a speech broadcast on state television.

Abdullah had suffered frequent bouts of ill health in recent years, and King Salman had recently taken on the ailing monarch’s responsibilities.

Prior to announcing Abdullah’s death, Saudi television cut to Koranic verses, which often signifies the passing of a senior royal.

A statement said Abdullah had died at 01:00 (22:00 GMT Thursday).

Analysis: Frank Gardner, BBC security correspondent

Saudi Arabia under King Salman faces a number of challenges. The first is ensuring the succession passes smoothly without any divisive jockeying for power within the ruling family. Then there is the ongoing threat from jihadists, both at home and across its borders.

Saudi Arabia is now sandwiched between an aggressive Islamic State (IS) to the north and al-Qaeda in Yemen to the south. Saudi warplanes have joined the US-led coalition in air strikes against IS, but this is deeply unpopular with many Saudis.

The government has yet to find a way to cope with mild calls for reforms and is abusing anti-terror laws to silence reformers and punish its critics. Longer term, it faces a growing unemployment problem.

About half the population is under 25 and there are nowhere near enough meaningful jobs for young Saudis.

But the country does at least have oil in its favour. At below $45 a barrel Saudi Arabia is one of the very few exporting countries to still make big margins on production and exploration. That puts it in a powerful position on the world stage.  Read more

Awramba Times (Addis Ababa) – Millions of Ethiopian Orthodox Christians colorfully celebrate Ethiopian Epiphany (Timket) throughout Ethiopia.

Timkat, a holiday falls on Tirr 11(January19) every year, is one of the greatest colorful festivals of Orthodox Christians in Ethiopia. The festival is observed in commemoration of Jesus Christ’s baptism in River Jordan. The celebration starts on the eve of the main festival.  The eve is known as ’Ketera’

Every year, the Tabots of each church are carried out in procession to a river or pool of water where the next day’s celebration will take place. A special tent is set up where each Tabot rests as members of the church choirs chant hymns that accompanied by a special dance of priests with their prayer sticks and sistera, the beating of drums, ringing of bells, and blowing of trumpets.

UK diplomats clash over Briton on death row in Ethiopia: Officials’ fury after Foreign Secretary claims he couldn’t ‘find time’ to help father-of-three facing execution

An explosive row has erupted between diplomats and Ministers over their reluctance to help a British man on death row in Ethiopia.
A series of extraordinary emails, obtained by The Mail on Sunday, reveal officials’ increasing frustration at political inaction over Andargachew Tsege.

Tsege, 59, a father-of-three from London, was snatched at an airport in Yemen last June and illegally rendered to Ethiopia. There are concerns he may have been tortured.

Yet Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said he could not ‘find time’ for a phone call to raise the issue and did not want to send a ‘negative’ letter.

In one email, an exasperated official asks: ‘Don’t we need to do more than give them a stern talking to?’
Tsege, who has lived in the UK since 1979, has been called Ethiopia’s Nelson Mandela. Tsege fell out with his university friend ex-Prime Minister Meles Zenawi, after he exposed government corruption and helped establish a pro-democracy party.
In 2009, he was sentenced to death in his absence for allegedly plotting a coup and planning to kill Ethiopian officials – claims he denies.

He was abducted on June 23 while en route to Eritrea, emerging two weeks later in Ethiopia, where he has since been paraded on TV. It is not known where he is being held.
The diplomatic exchanges disclose how officials were dismayed when British Ministers rejected requests to raise the case with Ethiopia. Read more

‘Crumbs’ – The First Ever Ethiopian Post-Apocalyptic, Surreal, Sci-Fi Feature Length Film (Trailer)

crumbs-the-first-ever-ethiopian-post-apocalyptic-surreal-sci-fi-feature-length-filmBy Tambay A. Obenson | Shadow and Act

(indiewire.com) – An unexpectedly peculiar film, and I love what I see here, if only for that reason. But there’s more than enough in it to make me want to see the entire film. It’s not exactly a regular occurrence that I come across post-apocalyptic, sci-fi romance films, starring Ethiopians.

Miguel Llansó’s “Crumbs,” a Spanish-Ethiopian co-production which made its world premiere on Tuesday (Jan 27) at the International Film Festival Rotterdam (IFFR), will have its market premiere at the European Film Market (EFM) in Berlin next week, where it’ll be shopped by Warsaw-based sales company, New Europe Film Sales.

Directed by Spaniard Llansó, who actually lives in Addis Ababa (Ethiopia), “Crumbs” stars Daniel Tadesse, and tells a story of diminutive superhero Gagano (played by Tadesse), a junk collector, who embarks on a “surreal epic journey” that’s set against “post-apocalyptic Ethiopian landscapes,” says the press description. He’s had enough of collecting “valuable crumbs of a decayed civilization,” when a spaceship that has been hovering high in the sky for years, starts showing signs of activity, and Gagano has to overcome his fears – which includes a witch, Santa Claus and second-generation Nazis – to find out that the world isn’t quite what he thought it was.

Intrigued? I am. It reads like something I’d make.

The director/actor pair (Llansó and Tadesse) have worked together before, on the award-winning 2013 short film “Chigger Ale,” about, wait for it… “Hitler´s Ethiopian clone.” It enjoyed a successful international film festival run, but I haven’t seen it, so can’t offer any useful commentary on the work, and what one can expect from “Crumbs,” which is their first feature film collaboration.

Jan Naszewski of New Europe Film Sales (the company that’s repping the film at the EFM) describes Llansó as a filmmaker with “a very distinctive voice… and we want to nurture it.”

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi of Egypt cuts short Ethiopia visit after 45 killed in Sinai Peninsula

El Sisi visits Ethiopia

Dr.Tewodros Adhanom, Foreign minister of Ethiopia welcomes President Sisi at Bole International Airport

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has cut short a visit to Ethiopia for an African Union summit, following a wave of deadly attacks in the Sinai Peninsula claimed by a group that pledges allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL).

The president’s office said in a statement that Sisi, who was scheduled to address the summit, would head back to Cairo after the opening session on Friday morning.

His decision comes as two children were killed in clashes between the army and fighters in Sinai hours after at least 45 people, mostly soldiers, died in violence there, security officials said.

Fighters fired a barrage of rockets and set off a car bomb in a series of attacks in North Sinai province in some of the worst anti-government violence in months, according to security officials.

Ansar Beit al-Maqdis that now calls itself the Sinai Province, said it was retaliating against a government crackdown on supporters of former President Mohamed Morsi.

It claimed responsibility for the attacks that struck the provincial capital of El-Arish, the nearby town of Sheik Zuwayid and the town of Rafah bordering the Gaza Strip.

The armed group claimed via a Twitter account that it “executed extensive, simultaneous attacks in the cities of El-Arish, Sheikh Zuweid and Rafah”.

A military base, a nearby police headquarters, a residential complex for army and police officers and an army checkpoint were targeted in El-Arish in the biggest such attack since October.

“Terrorist elements have attacked several police and army headquarters and facilities using explosive-laden vehicles and rockets,” the military said.

Security officials said fighters first fired rockets at the El-Arish police headquarters and the military base, which was followed by the car bomb.

Rocket barrage

Minutes later a barrage of rockets struck the nearby housing complex.

In a separate attack, an officer was killed when a rocket struck an army checkpoint in the town of Rafah, on the border with Gaza.

Overall, officials said at least 62 people were wounded in the attacks in North Sinai.

In a separate incident a police officer was killed when struck by a bomb in the canal city of Suez.

The El-Arish attack was the deadliest since an October 24 assault, which was also near El-Arish, when fighters killed 30 soldiers and wounded scores more.

That attack prompted the authorities to build a buffer zone along the Gaza border to prevent fighters infiltrating from the Palestinian territory.

Armed groups have regularly attacked security forces in the Sinai Peninsula since President Morsi was toppled by then army chief and now President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi in July 2013.
